Coal tar

Black or black brown viscous liquid produced by carbonization of coal with pungent odor. Tar for short. The coal tar can be divided into low temperature coal tar, medium temperature coal tar and high temperature coal tar according to the carbonization temperature. The coal tar obtained in the coke production belongs to the high temperature coal tar. It is one of the purification products of coke oven gas which is condensed and separated in the process of crude gas cooling.

Coal tar as raw materials in general processing refined from a variety of chemical products, (see coal tar) can also be used directly, such as ingredients group binder coke and coal activated carbon for industrial briquette, the points can be used as fuel oil, blast furnace fuel and wood charcoal black anti-corrosion oil and raw materials.

The composition and properties of low temperature coal tar has great difference with the high temperature coal tar, oxygen compounds and chain hydrocarbon containing more in the low temperature coal tar, the content of phenol and its derivatives up to 10% ~ 30%, alkane hydrocarbon is about 20%, while heavy oil (TAR) content is relatively small.

Different kinds of raw coal and different pyrolysis processes have different compositions and properties of coal tar produced.
High temperature coal tar relative density is greater than 1, with a lot of asphalt, almost completely is a mixture of aromatic compounds, estimation of components in the total number of 10 thousand or so, from the single compounds were isolated and identified about 500 species, which accounted for about 55% of the total amount of tar.
